Making an entrance: Gwyneth Paltrow wore a striking black shimmering, asymmetrical Michael Kors gown to the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City last night

There was a lot of competition, but Gwyneth Paltrow stole the show as she arrived for the star-studded CFDA Fashion Awards last night.

The actress was dressed in a sleek fitted glimmering black Michael Kors gown, which clung to her toned figure.

With her hair pulled back in a tight ponytail, her asymmetrical dress flattered her statuesque shape.

But the 37-year-old had plenty of challengers for the best-dressed crown at the Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City on Monday.

Long length and fabulous: Sarah Jessica Parker, wearing a design by her late friend Alexander McQueen, posed with designer Diane von Furstenberg

Amongst the other guests were Sarah Jessica Parker, who wore a brightly patterned fairytale gown from late friend Alexander McQueen's pre-autumn 2010 collection and posed with designer Diane Von Furstenberg.

Paltrow and Parker couldn't have looked more different, but their stunning outfits were equally eye-catching.

The Sex And The City star paid tribute to McQueen, who committed suicide in February, before a string of models presented his final collection in a catwalk show.

Handsome couple: Somalian supermodel and CFDA winner Iman, in a strapless fishtail Giambattista Valli gown, with her husband, rocker David Bowie

She said it was 'with honour and great regret' that she was helping marking his contribution to the fashion world and passing, adding: 'I would have loved to see what he would do next.'

Joining Gwyneth in black was supermodel Iman, in a fishtailed strapless Giambattista Valli gown, and Canadian model Jessica Stam.

Somalian supermodel Iman, who attended with her rock star husband David Bowie, received the Fashion Icon accolade from her friend, actress Isabella Rossellini.

During her acceptance speech, Iman joked to her famous spouse: 'Move over, you're not the only icon in the house.'

Cocktail ladies: Actresses Emilie de Ravin, Rachel Weisz, in a blue Jason Wu shift, and Kate Mara, in red Zac Posen, kept it above the knee

Colour injection: (L-R) Jessica Biel stood out in a loud Diane Von Furstenburg dress, former Lost star Maggie Grace wore a baby pink tunic dress, while reality TV star Whitney Port went for classic Hollywood glamour in a silver halterneck David Meister dress

Wearing the loudest dress of the night was actress Jessica Biel, who wore an uncharacteristically flamboyant yellow, brown and green Diane Von Furstenberg dress.

Choosing white for the high-profile event were actress Dakota Fanning, model Hilary Rhoda and actress Dree Hemingway.

And in beige were Estonian model Carmen Kass, British TV presenter Alexa Chung and Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel.

Another popular choice of outfit was the brightly coloured cocktail dress as seen on actresses Emilie de Ravin, Rachel Weisz and Kate Mara.

Oscar winner Weisz presented Jason Wu with the Swarovski award for his womenswear collection, saying: 'I've been a fan of his for a long time, ever since I saw Michelle Obama in her inauguration dress.'
